Stories of Swad

Submission Deadline: Friday 28th February 2025

Everyone has a story!!

Swadlincote Festival of Words is looking for people who live or work in Swad to share a short funny, amusing or warm-hearted story about their life in Swadlincote, past or present.

Storytelling is like a magical bridge that connects people, no matter how different they are. Whether you’re swapping tales with a stranger on the bus or listening to a gripping podcast, stories let you step into someone else’s shoes. They help us see the world through fresh eyes.

Then there’s the beauty of keeping cultures and traditions alive. Your grandparents passing down tales of “the good old days” or stories about how things were done back then. These aren’t just charming anecdotes—they’re the threads that weave our shared history together. Without stories, the lessons and values of the past might just fade away like an unlabelled tin in the back of the cupboard. Storytelling keeps those treasures alive for future generations.

And let’s not forget how stories make learning so much more exciting. A dull textbook can be as thrilling as watching paint dry, but tell the same facts through a compelling narrative, and suddenly everyone’s hooked. Whether it’s about heroic explorers, groundbreaking scientists, or even how biscuits are made, a good story sparks curiosity and gets the imagination whirring.

Your Story

Stories can be about any area of your life as long as it is clean and does not include any profanities. The stories must be fact, not fiction, and must not name individuals in any way. They may include place names and, of course, your own name, as long as you are over the age of 16. Anyone under the age of 16 should not record their name or any other information that is identifiable to them or any other person that may be involved in their story.

How to Tell Your Story

Stories can be recorded on your phone and submitted as an MP3 file by email to hello@swadlincotefestivalofwords.co.uk. You can also use the voice recording function via WhatsApp and send to 07727 257262.

If you have a story to share and you are not sure about recording your voice, you can always jump on a Teams or Zoom Call with the project coordinators and we can record your story that way. Simply send an email or a text to the number above.

Recorded stories should be around five minutes long and please make sure that all recordings are in a quiet place, ideally with no background sound.

The stories selected will be played on a reel as part of this year's Festival of Words
